Corpus: Thyrohyoid membrane
1. Definition
The thyrohyoid membrane is an external laryngeal ligament that suspends the larynx between the hyoid bone and the trachea.
2. Anatomy
The thyrohyoid membrane is a quadrangular structure that connects the upper border of the thyroid cartilage to the hyoid bone. It contains fibrous reinforcements in specific regions:
- Ventral and median (unpaired): median thyrohyoid ligament
- Dorsolateral (paired): lateral thyrohyoid ligaments on each side
Several important structures pass through the thyrohyoid membrane, including:
- The internal branch (ramus internus) of the superior laryngeal nerve.
- The superior laryngeal artery
- The superior laryngeal vein
