Corpus: Thyrohyoid membrane

The thyrohyoid membrane is an external laryngeal ligament that suspends the larynx between the hyoid bone and the trachea.

The thyrohyoid membrane is a quadrangular structure that connects the upper border of the thyroid cartilage to the hyoid bone. It contains fibrous reinforcements in specific regions:

• Ventral and median (unpaired): median thyrohyoid ligament
• Dorsolateral (paired): lateral thyrohyoid ligaments on each side

Several important structures pass through the thyrohyoid membrane, including:

• The internal branch (ramus internus) of the superior laryngeal nerve.
• The superior laryngeal artery
• The superior laryngeal vein
