Definition

The rectus posterior minor capitis muscle is a skeletal muscle located in the neck and is part of the autochthonous back musculature.

Course

The rectus posterior minor capitis muscle originates from the posterior tubercle of the atlas (the 1st cervical vertebra). It runs straight to attach to the inferior nuchal line of the occipital bone.

Innervation

The rectus posterior minor capitis muscle is innervated by the medial branches of the posterior rami of the spinal nerves from segment C1. The dorsal ramus of the first spinal nerve is also known as the suboccipital nerve.

Function

When the rectus posterior minor capitis muscle contracts on one side, it causes slight tilting and rotation of the head to the same side. When both sides contract simultaneously, the muscle aids in dorsiflexion of the head.

Variety

In some individuals, the rectus posterior minor capitis muscle may be completely absent or very small on one side.
