Definition
The anterior tibial artery arises below the popliteus muscle as a vascular branch from the popliteal artery.
Course
The anterior tibial artery and its accompanying veins run through the interosseus membrane into the extensor ligament. There it runs
- together with the deep peroneal nerve proximally between the extensor digitorum longus muscle and the tibialis anterior muscle
- further distally between the extensor hallucis longus muscle and the tibialis anterior muscle.
Finally, it crosses under the extensor hallucis longus muscle and emerges on the back of the foot as the dorsalis pedis artery.
Branches
The anterior tibial artery gives off the following branches:
- posterior tibial recurrent artery
- anterior tibial recurrent artery
- lateral anterior malleolar artery
- medial anterior malleolar artery
In addition, it releases muscular branches to the surrounding musculature and the circumflex fibular artery .
