Corpus: Rectus capitis lateralis muscle
1. Definition
The rectus capitis lateralis muscle is a skeletal muscle that is part of the secondary back musculature and is also considered a component of the neck musculature.
2. Progression
2.1. Origin
The rectus capitis lateralis muscle originates from the anterior part of the transverse process of the first cervical vertebra (atlas).
2.2. Attachment
The muscle inserts onto the jugular process of the occipital bone.
3. Innervation
The rectus capitis lateralis muscle is innervated by the anterior rami of the spinal nerves from the C1 and C2 segments of the spinal cord.
4. Function
When the rectus capitis lateralis muscle contracts unilaterally, it tilts the head to the same side. Bilateral contraction results in slight dorsiflexion of the head.
