Corpus: Fibularis brevis muscle
Synonym: peroneus brevis muscle
1. Definition
The fibularis brevis muscle is a skeletal muscle of the lower extremity. It belongs to the lateral group of lower leg muscles.
2. Course
2.1. Origin
The fibularis brevis muscle originates from the distal lateral surface of the fibula and parts of the anterior and posterior intermuscular septum of the lower leg.
2.2. Approach
The fibularis brevis muscle ends in a long tendon that runs caudally behind the lateral malleolus. It then passes ventrally in close contact with the tendon of the fibularis longus muscle, and extends under the superior and inferior fibular retinacula. Finally, it attaches to the tuberosity of the fifth metatarsal bone.
3. Innervation
The fibularis brevis muscle is innervated by the superficial fibular nerve.
4. Function
The fibularis brevis muscle plays a crucial role in pronation and abduction (eversion) of the foot. It also supports plantar flexion, which is primarily performed by the fibularis longus muscle.
