Corpus: Lateral malleolus
from Latin: malleolus - small hammer
1. Definition
The lateral malleolus is a bony projection located on the lateral side at the distal end of the fibula.
2. Anatomy
The lateral malleolus, along with the medial malleolus of the tibia, forms the malleolar fork, which encases the talus of the foot and contributes to the structure of the talocrural joint. It extends approximately 1–1.5 cm farther caudally than the medial malleolus, providing additional stability to the joint.
Numerous ligaments originate or attach at the lateral malleolus, contributing to the stabilization of the foot skeleton and ankle joint. These include ligaments that connect to the bones of both the foot and the lower leg, ensuring proper alignment and function of the ankle.
