Corpus: Anterior tibiofibular ligament
Synonym: anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL)
1. Definition
The anterior tibiofibular ligament is a flat, triangular to trapezoidal ligament located near the lateral malleolus.
2. Anatomy
The anterior tibiofibular ligament extends between the adjacent edges of the tibia and fibula, running distally and laterally. It is wider at the distal end than at the proximal end, with a length varying between 12 and 20 mm and a thickness between 1 and 3 mm.[1]
Along with the posterior tibiofibular ligament, it is a part of the tibiofibular syndesmosis.
3. Function
The anterior tibiofibular ligament stabilizes the tibiofibular joint.
4. Clinic
An injury to the anterior tibiofibular ligament can occur either in isolation or in combination with ankle fractures.
