Corpus: Anterior interosseus artery
Synonym: volar interosseous artery
1. Definition
The anterior interosseous artery is a branch of the common interosseous artery. It is accompanied by the anterior interosseous vein.
2. Anatomy
The anterior interosseous artery, accompanied by the anterior interosseous nerve, runs on the volar side of the interosseous membrane of the forearm in the volar interosseous space. It is overlapped by the edges of the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor pollicis longus muscles. Throughout its course, it provides smaller branches to the surrounding muscles and additional supply vessels for the radius and ulna. At the upper edge of the pronator quadratus muscle, it pierces the interosseous membrane, reaching the dorsal side of the forearm, where it forms an anastomosis with the posterior interosseous artery. The artery, along with the posterior interosseous artery, drains into the dorsal carpal network.
