Corpus: Transverse ligament of knee
Synonyms: transverse intermeniscal ligament, anterior intermeniscal ligament
1. Definition
The transverse ligament of the knee is an intra-articular ligament of the femorotibial joint. It connects the anterior horns of the medial and lateral meniscus. The thickness of the ligament varies between individuals.
2. Function
The transverse ligament of the knee prevents the anterior horns of the menisci from shifting ventrally when the knee joint is extended. It also equalizes unequal loads between the tibial and femoral condyles. In a slightly flexed position of the knee joint, the transverse ligament reduces the anterior and posterior translational movement of the medial anterior horn of the meniscus.
