Corpus: Sartorius muscle
Synonym: tailor's muscle
1. Definition
The sartorius muscle is a muscle of the thigh musculature. Although it is located on the ventral side of the thigh like the extensors, it facilitates flexion in both the hip and knee joints.
2. Course
The sartorius muscle originates from the anterior superior iliac spine of the ilium and the adjacent section of the anterior edge of the iliac crest. It inserts on the medial side of the tibia. The attachment tendon of the sartorius muscle forms the so-called pes anserinus together with the tendons of the gracilis and semitendinosus muscles.
The sartorius muscle runs in an arc from ventral-lateral to dorsal-medial, forming the lateral boundary of the femoral triangle.
3. Innervation
The sartorius muscle is innervated by the femoral nerve (L2 to L4)
4. Function
The sartorius muscle supports several movements, including:
- Flexion in the hip joint and knee joint
- External rotation and abduction of the thigh
- Internal rotation of the lower leg
