Corpus: Rectus capitis anterior muscle
1. Definition
The rectus capitis anterior muscle is a skeletal muscle that belongs to the secondary back musculature and is also considered part of the neck musculature.
2. Progression
2.1. Origin
The rectus capitis anterior muscle originates from the transverse process and the lateral mass of the first cervical vertebra (atlas).
2.2. Attachment
The muscle inserts onto the basilar part of the occipital bone.
3. Innervation
The rectus capitis anterior muscle is innervated by the anterior rami of the spinal nerves from the C1 and C2 segments of the spinal cord.
4. Function
When the rectus capitis anterior muscle contracts unilaterally, it tilts the head to the same side. Bilateral contraction results in a slight forward bending of the head.
