Corpus: Popliteal vein
1. Definition
The popliteal vein is a vein in the lower extremity that drains venous blood from the lower leg and knee to the femoral vein.
2. Course
The popliteal vein is formed by the union of the posterior tibial vein and the anterior tibial vein. Before reaching the knee joint, it receives blood from the fibular veins and the gastrocnemius veins. In the popliteal fossa, the small saphenous vein joins the popliteal vein. Together with the popliteal artery, it enters the adductor canal through the adductor hiatus and becomes the femoral vein.
