Corpus: Anterior meniscofemoral ligament
Synonym: Humphrey ligament
1. Definition
The anterior meniscofemoral ligament, also known as the Humphrey ligament, runs alongside the posterior meniscofemoral ligament from the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus to the medial condyle of the femur, both in front of and behind the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). The anterior meniscofemoral ligament is present in approximately half of the population and follows a course oriented according to the PCL.
2. Function
The anterior meniscofemoral ligament acts as a synergistic structure to the posterior cruciate ligament, contributing to the stabilization of the knee joint in the sagittal plane. It is also tensioned during knee joint flexion, enhancing joint stability.
