Corpus: Anterior ligament of fibular head
1. Definition
The anterior ligament of the fibular head extends from the front of the fibular head to the tibia. The ligament reinforces the joint capsule and stabilizes the proximal tibiofibular joint.
2. Anatomy
The anterior ligament of the fibular head is composed of tightly packed collagenous fiber strands. Typically, this ligament is more pronounced than its dorsal counterpart, the posterior ligament of the fibular head.
3. Function
Together with the posterior ligament of the fibular head, the anterior ligament of the fibular head secures the proximal tibiofibular joint. It is a synovial joint with a joint cavity. It is barely mobile due to tight ligament protection (so-called amphiarthrosis). Only weak rotational and translational movements can be performed.
