1. Definition
The term compartmentum cruris anterius or extensor compartment of the lower leg refers to a compartment that contains the extensor muscles of the lower leg.
2. Anatomy
The extensor ligament is bounded by the following structures:
- anterior: fascia cruris (fascia of the lower leg)
- posterior: interosseous membrane of the leg
- medially: tibia (shin-bone)
- lateral: crural intermuscular septum
It contains the following muscles:
- tibialis anterior muscle
- extensor digitorum longus muscle
- extensor hallucis longus muscle
- fibularis tertius
