Corpus: Antebrachial fascia
1. Definition
The antebrachial fascia is a fibrous, dense fascia that surrounds the musculature of the forearm.
2. Anatomy
The antebrachial fascia is a continuation of the brachial fascia, which envelops the musculature of the upper arm.
It is connected to the olecranon and the dorsal edge of the ulna, and it sends numerous muscle septa deep into the tissue, separating the forearm muscles from each other. The antebrachial fascia is thicker on the dorsal side of the forearm and in the distal part than on the volar side and in the proximal part.
In the area of the flexor tendons, the forearm fascia is particularly reinforced and forms the flexor retinaculum here. On the dorsal side of the forearm, there is a similar condensation of fibers, the extensor retinaculum.
In the elbow region, the antebrachial fascia has a larger opening (aperture) for the connection of the deep and superficial arm veins.
3. Function
The antebrachial fascia serves as the origin surface for numerous forearm muscles and forms the muscular compartments of the forearm.
