Corpus: Deep fibular nerve

The deep fibular nerve is a mixed nerve branch of the common fibular nerve.

The deep fibular nerve splits off at the bifurcation of the common fibular nerve between the fibula and the long fibular muscle. It pierces the anterior intermuscular septum cruris and runs medially and caudally below the extensor digitorum longus muscle, crossing the anterior surface of the interosseous membrane. In the centre of the lower leg it connects with the anterior tibial artery. Together they run distally under the retinaculum musculorum extensorum superius. Once at the ankle joint, the profundus fibular nerve splits into its two end branches under the inferior extensor retinaculum.

The profundus fibular nerve supplies the following muscles:

• Tibialis anterior muscle
• Extensor hallucis longus muscle
• Extensor hallucis brevis muscle
• Extensor digitorum longus muscle
• Extensor digitorum brevis muscle
• Fibularis tertius muscle

The sensitive parts of the profundus fibular nerve supply the skin between the first and second toes.
