Definition

The superior middle alveolar nerve is a branch of the infraorbital nerve. Its branches extend into the superior dental plexus and provide sensory innervation to parts of the maxillary sinus mucosa, as well as the premolars and occasionally the mesiobuccal root of the first molar.

Anatomy

The superior middle alveolar nerve branches off from the infraorbital nerve between the exits of the posterior superior alveolar nerve and the anterior superior alveolar nerve. It communicates with both neighboring nerves and forms the superior dental plexus. The nerve may be absent, in which case its area of innervation is covered by the posterior superior alveolar nerve.
