1. Definition
The thyroepiglottic muscle is one of the internal muscles of the larynx. According to recent nomenclature, it is considered a part of the thyroarytenoid muscle, specifically referred to as the thyroepiglottic part.
2. Course
The thyroepiglottic muscle originates from the thyroid cartilage and extends to attach to the epiglottis.
3. Innervation
The muscle is innervated by the inferior laryngeal nerve, a branch of the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
4. Function
The thyroepiglottic muscle adducts the vocal cords, contributing to a slight lowering of the epiglottis.
