Corpus: Straight sinus
from Latin: sinus - bay, rectus - straight
1. Definition
The straight sinus is an intradural venous vessel of the brain formed by the junction of the two layers of the tentorium cerebelli at their common attachment point with the falx cerebri.
2. Function
The straight sinus receives venous inflow from the:
- inferior sagittal sinus
- great cerebral vein (Vena Galeni)
It then contributes to the confluence of sinuses, where it joins with the superior sagittal sinus and the occipital sinus. Venous blood then drains via the transverse sinus into the sigmoid sinus, followed by the internal jugular vein.
