Corpus: Splenorenal ligament

1. Definition

The splenorenal ligament is a fold of peritoneum that extends from the front of the left kidney to the splenic hilum.

2. Anatomy

The splenorenal ligament is part of the greater omentum. It encloses the splenic artery and vein, which travel from the posterior abdominal wall to the spleen, as well as the tail of the pancreas, which is the only part of the pancreas located within the peritoneal cavity. Differentiating the splenorenal ligament from nearby ligaments, such as the phrenicosplenic ligament, can be challenging. The term "splenorenal ligament" is somewhat misleading because there is no direct connection between the spleen and kidney.

3. Embryology

The splenorenal ligament develops from the dorsal mesentery of the spleen, which itself is a part of the dorsal mesogastrium. As the stomach rotates and tilts during development, the dorsal mesogastrium shifts to the lower left, positioning the ligament beneath the greater curvature of the stomach.
