Corpus: Pterygomandibular raphe
1. Definition
The pterygomandibular raphe is a tendinous adhesion suture between the constrictor pharyngis superior muscle and the buccinator muscle.
2. Anatomy
The upper end of the pterygomandibular raphe is connected to the hook process (hamulus pterygoideus) of the sphenoid bone, the lower end attaches to the dorsal end of the linea mylohyoidea of the mandible. The medial side of the pterygomandibular raphe is covered by the oral mucosa. The lateral side is separated from the mandibular ramus by fatty tissue.
The pterygomandibular raphe raises the pterygomandibular plica in the oral mucosa. It also forms the ventral border of the lateropharyngeal space.
