Corpus: Posterior superior alveolar artery
1. Definition
The superior posterior alveolar artery is a vascular branch from the 3rd segment of the maxillary artery (pterygopalatine division) that supplies the posterior teeth of the maxilla.
2. Course
The superior posterior alveolar artery often arises together with the infraorbital artery from the maxillary artery after the vessel has entered the pterygopalatine fossa. It descends along the maxillary tuberosity, where it divides into numerous branches. Some of these branches supply the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus, while others, known as dental branches, enter the alveolar canals of the maxilla to supply the molars and premolars. Additional branches follow the alveolar process to supply the gingiva.
