from latin: palma - palm; brevis - short
1. Definition
The palmaris brevis muscle is a short, square muscle that belongs to the hypothenar muscles of the hand and is located immediately beneath the skin of the hypothenar eminence.
2. Anatomy
2.1. Origin
The muscle originates from the ligament structures of the flexor retinaculum and the palmar aponeurosis.
2.2. Insertion
The muscle radiates into the skin on the ulnar side of the palm.
3. Innervation
The innervation of the palmaris brevis muscle is provided by the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve from the brachial plexus (segments: C8 and Th1). The palmaris brevis is the only muscle innervated by the superficial branch.
4. Function
The palmaris brevis muscle tightens the skin over the hypothenar eminence.
