Corpus: Lateral tarsal artery
1. Definition
The lateral tarsal artery is a branch of the dorsalis pedis artery.
2. Course
The lateral tarsal artery arises from the dorsal pedal artery as it crosses the navicular pedal bone. It runs laterally in an arc, lies dorsally on the tarsal bones and is covered by the extensor digitorum brevis muscle.
The lateral tarsal artery supplies the extensor digitorum brevis muscle and the joints of the tarsal bones. It also feeds the lateral malleolar network and anastomoses with branches of the arcuate artery, the anterior lateral malleolar artery, the lateral plantar artery and the perforating ramus of the fibular artery.
