Corpus: Fibular artery
1. Definition
The fibular artery is a branch of the posterior tibial artery. It can also arise from the anterior tibial artery.
2. Course
The fibular artery branches off from the posterior tibial artery just below the knee. It runs medially of the fibula in the deep flexor ligament distally and gives off several branches to the surrounding musculature. It ends in the substance of the fibularis longus muscle.
3. Branches
- Communicating branch (to the posterior tibial artery)
- Perforating branch
- Lateral malleolar branches
- Calcaneal branches (to the calcanear network)
4. Clinical anatomy
In clinical anatomy, the vascular section of the popliteal artery between the exit of the anterior tibial artery and the junction of the fibular artery is called the tibiofibular trunk.
