1. Definition
The lacrimal sac is a component of the lacrimal apparatus, which is part of the drainage system for lacrimal fluid, temporarily storing the tears before they are drained.
2. Anatomy
The lacrimal sac is situated in the lacrimal fossa, a depression formed by the lacrimal bone and the frontal process of the maxilla, and is encased by periosteum. It transitions into the nasolacrimal duct towards the nasal cavity, serving the purpose of temporary lacrimal fluid storage.
