1. Definition
The inferior mesenteric plexus is a network of autonomic nerves located around the inferior mesenteric artery.
2. Anatomy
The inferior mesenteric plexus consists of nerve fibers and several small collections of ganglion cells, collectively referred to as the inferior mesenteric ganglion. It receives sympathetic input from the lumbar splanchnic nerves.
3. Function
The inferior mesenteric plexus regulates the secretory and motor functions of the descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum through visceromotor fibers. It also carries viscerosensitive fibers that transmit sensory information from these abdominal organs.
