Corpus: Hyoglossus muscle
1. Definition
The hyoglossus muscle is a thin, quadrangular skeletal muscle that is part of the tongue's musculature.
2. Course
The hyoglossus muscle originates from the body and greater horn of the hyoid bone. Its fibers extend almost vertically upwards, inserting between the styloglossus muscle and the inferior longitudinal muscle into the body of the tongue, where they blend into the tongue’s fibrous structure (aponeurosis).
3. Innervation
Like all other tongue muscles, the hyoglossus muscle is innervated by the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII).
4. Function
The hyoglossus muscle pulls the tongue downward and backward, acting as a partial antagonist to the styloglossus muscle.
