Corpus: Carpus
Definition
The carpus is located between the radiocarpal joint of the forearm and the metacarpus.
Anatomy
The carpus primarily comprises the carpal bones (ossa carpi) and is further supported by various ligaments and tendons, along with a thin layer of overlying skin and connective tissue. Key ligament structures in the carpus include:
- Radiate carpal ligament
- Palmar intercarpal ligaments
- Dorsal intercarpal ligaments
- Interosseus intercarpal ligaments
- Pisohamate ligament
Fibers from the forearm bones and the metacarpus integrate into these ligaments, contributing to the carpus' stability and function.
Important Anatomical Structures
- Carpal sulcus (a groove on the palmar side of the carpus)
- Eminentia carpi radialis (a prominent area on the radial side of the wrist)
- Eminentia carpi ulnaris (a prominent area on the ulnar side of the wrist)
These structures play a crucial role in the wrist's anatomy and function, influencing the movement and support of the hand.
