Synonym: soft part of nostrils
1. Definition
The soft parts of the wing of the nose are movable soft tissue flaps in the area of the nasal entrance that frame the nasal vestibule from the lateral side.
2. Anatomy
The cranial border of the nostrils is formed externally by the sulcus alaris and internally by the limen nasi. The lateral crus of the wing cartilage, which is responsible for shaping the nostril, is located in the connective tissue of the nostril. The fibres of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle, which lifts the nostril, also radiate from here.
The nostrils are covered on the outside by skin and on the inside by a multi-layered keratinised squamous epithelium.
