Definition
The common iliac arteries are two large, powerful vascular branches of the abdominal aorta that form the aortic bifurcation.
Course
The common iliac artery is only about 3 to 4 cm long in adults, but has a diameter of more than 10 mm. After a short course, it divides into two branches near the sacroiliac joint:
The common iliac artery is accompanied by the common iliac vein of the same name.
Function
The common iliac arteries supply the pelvic region and the lower extremity.
