Definition
The external petrosal nerve is a nerve located at the base of the skull that arises from the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve. It carries sympathetic nerve fibers from the nerve plexus of the middle meningeal artery.
Anatomy
The external petrosal nerve runs extradurally, lateral to the lesser petrosal nerve and the greater petrosal nerve.
