Course

The central retinal vein is a short vessel formed by the convergence of several small veins on the optic disc. It enters the optic nerve and exits it again about 10 mm after leaving the eyeball. It drains the venules and capillaries of the retina. Depending on the individual, the vein drains either into the superior ophthalmic vein or directly into the cavernous sinus.

Clinic

Retinal vein occlusion results in a buildup of blood in the retina, leading to progressive visual impairment.
