Definition
The deep lingual artery is the terminal branch of the lingual artery, after it has given off the sublingual artery.
Course
The deep lingual artery runs along the underside of the tongue, just between the inferior longitudinal muscle and the mucosa. It lies lateral to the genioglossus muscle and is accompanied by the lingual nerve, which, unlike the artery, crosses over the hyoglossus muscle rather than underneath it.
At the tip of the tongue, the vessel anastomoses with the artery from the opposite side.
