Corpus: Triceps tendon reflex
1. Definition
The triceps tendon reflex is a deep tendon reflex that causes contraction of the triceps muscle and extension of the elbow joint when the triceps tendon is struck. It is mediated by the radial nerve and involves motor neurons from spinal cord segments C7 and C8.
2. Procedure
The reflex can be tested with the patient either sitting or lying down.
- If the patient is lying down, the arm is bent and placed on the patient's chest. If the patient is seated, the examiner supports the arm so that it is flexed at both the elbow and shoulder.
- The reflex is elicited by delivering a firm but not excessive tap to the triceps tendon just above the olecranon.
- The same procedure is then performed on the opposite arm to compare reflex responses.
- If the reflex is weak or absent, the patient may be asked to clench their teeth to enhance the response.
