Corpus: Testicular vein
1. Definition
The testicular vein is a blood vessel responsible for draining blood from the testicle.
2. Course
The testicular vein forms from the venous network known as the pampiniform plexus. It accompanies the testicular artery in the spermatic cord and passes through the inguinal canal into the abdominal cavity, running cranially along the psoas major muscle. The right testicular vein drains into the inferior vena cava, while the left testicular vein drains into the left renal vein.
3. Clinic
Spasmodic dilatations of the pampiniform plexus, known as varicoceles, occur most commonly on the left side due to the right-angled junction of the left testicular vein with the left renal vein, which creates an unfavorable blood flow dynamic. This condition affects nearly 90 % of cases on the left side of the scrotum.
