Corpus: Temporomandibular ligament
1. Definition
The temporomandibular ligament is a short ligament at the temporomandibular joint.
2. Anatomy
The temporomandibular ligament consists of two short fibre bundles. They attach cranially to the side of the zygomatic arch and to the articular tubercle, caudally to the lateral and dorsal side of the collum mandibulae, as well as with some fibres to the temporomandibular joint head.
The ligament is wider above than below, and the fibres run caudally and dorsally. Externally, the ligament is covered by the parotid gland.
3. Function
The temporomandibular ligament restricts the dorsal movement of the mandible.
