Corpus: Superior hypogastric plexus
1. Definition
The superior hypogastric plexus is an autonomic nerve plexus located in front of the vertebral bodies at the level of the aortic bifurcation. It represents the caudal continuation of the abdominal aortic plexus.
2. Course
The superior hypogastric plexus arises from the abdominal aortic plexus and continues into the lesser pelvis, where it divides into the paired hypogastric nerves. These nerves further descend to form the inferior hypogastric plexus. The superior hypogastric plexus receives postganglionic sympathetic fibers from the abdominal aortic plexus and preganglionic fibers from the third and fourth lumbar splanchnic nerves.
