Corpus: Recurrent artery of Heubner

after the German paediatrician Otto Heubner
Synonym: medial striate artery

1. Definition

The recurrent artery of Heubner is a branch of the anterior cerebral artery that usually descends laterally from the proximal A2 segment or distal A1 segment – shortly after the branch of the anterior communicating artery.

2. Anatomy

The vascular territory of the recurrent artery of Heubner is the anteromedial segment of the caudate nucleus and the anteroinferior segment of the internal capusle, as well as parts of the putamen and the septal nuclei.

3. Pathology

Obstructed blood flow in the recurrent artery of Heubner (e.g. due to an embolism after clipping of an aneurysm) can cause single infarcts in these subcortical areas and subsequently hemiparesis.
