1. Definition
The interossei plantares muscles are three small muscles that belong to the short muscles of the foot. They are located on the sole of the foot beneath the dorsal interosseous muscles.
2. Course
2.1. Origin
The interossei plantares muscles originate from the base and the medial side of the third, fourth, and fifth metatarsal bones.
2.2. Attachment
The short tendons of these muscles attach to the medial side of the proximal phalanges of the third, fourth, and fifth toes, as well as to the aponeurosis of the tendons of the extensor digitorum longus muscle.
3. Innervation
The lateral plantar nerve (segments S1 and S2) innervates the interossei plantares muscles.
4. Function
The interossei plantares muscles are responsible for the adduction of the toes at the metatarsophalangeal joints, flexion of the proximal phalanx, and extension of the middle and distal phalanges.
