Corpus: Pharyngeal nerve of pterygopalatine ganglion
1. Definition
The pharyngeal nerve of the pterygopalatine ganglion is a small branch of the maxillary nerve that passes through the pterygopalatine ganglion without forming synapses. It provides sensory innervation to the mucous membrane of the pharynx.
2. Course
The maxillary nerve enters the pterygopalatine fossa through the foramen rotundum. In the fossa, some nerve fibers pass through the pterygopalatine ganglion without synapsing and continue as the pharyngeal branch. This branch, along with the pharyngeal artery from the maxillary artery, travels through the palatovaginal canal to reach the nasopharynx.
