Corpus: Palmar ligament
1. Definition
The palmar ligament is the palmar-side ligament of all finger joints.
2. Anatomy
All finger joints possess a palmar ligament:
- Metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb
- Metacarpophalangeal joint (knuckle joint)
- All interphalangeal joints: one for the thumb and PIP and DIP for the other fingers
The palmar ligament of each finger joint is woven into the palmar side of the capsule and fused with the two collateral ligaments. It prevents hyperextension of the fingers.
3. Clinic
A hyperextension injury can lead to a bony avulsion of the palmar plate.
