1. Definition
The collateral ligaments of the finger joints are referred to as the "ligamenta collateralia articulationum digitorum manus". They are commonly abbreviated as collateral ligaments.
2. Anatomy
The collateral ligaments can be divided into the following layers:
- Deep layer
- Superficial layer
Depending on the involved joint, the ligaments may be more or less developed. For example, the phalangoglenoid ligament is typically absent at the distal interphalangeal joint (DIP).
