Corpus: Oblique arytenoid muscle
1. Definition
The oblique arytenoid muscle is a paired muscle that is part of the internal laryngeal musculature.
2. Course
The oblique arytenoid muscle originates from the basal third (muscular process) of one arytenoid cartilage and runs obliquely to the upper third (apex) of the opposite arytenoid cartilage. Additionally, some fibers extend into the aryepiglottic fold, where they are referred to as the aryepiglotticus muscle.
3. Innervation
The muscle is innervated by the terminal branch of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, known as the inferior laryngeal nerve.
4. Function
The oblique arytenoid muscle functions by drawing the arytenoid cartilages together and tilting them inward, which constricts the intercartilaginous part of the larynx.
