Corpus: Femoral head
1. Definition
The femoral head is the rounded, proximal part of the thigh bone (femur) that articulates with the hip socket (acetabulum). Together they form the hip joint.
2. Anatomy
The femoral head has an almost spherical shape, orientated medially and cranially, and slightly ventrally. It is connected to the neck of the femur (collum femoris) caudally and laterally.
The surface of the femoral head is smooth and covered with cartilage. Slightly below the central pole, there is a small oval depression called the fovea capitis femoris. It serves as the attachment point for the ligament of the femoral head.
