Corpus: Deep transverse metacarpal ligament
1. Definition
The deep transverse metacarpal ligament is a narrow band, that connects the palmar side of the metacarpophalangeal joints II - V.
2. Anatomy
The deep transverse metacarpal ligament runs palmarly in depth at the level of the heads of the second to fifth metacarpal bones, connecting them transversely. Also inserting into the course of the ligament are the palmar ligaments, which form a gliding bed for the flexor tendons.
The volar surface of the ligament is concave. The flexor tendons of the fingers run over it, while the palmar interosseous muscles run behind it.
3. Function
The deep transverse metacarpal ligament serves the passive tensioning of the metacarpal bones among themselves. It restricts finger spreading by the band.
