Corpus: Deep middle cerebral vein
Synonym: Vena cerebri media profunda
1. Definition
The deep middle cerebral vein is an external cerebral vein that runs in the lower part of the lateral sulcus. It drains the insular lobe and neighboring areas of the cerebral cortex.
2. Anatomy
The deep middle cerebral vein accompanies the middle cerebral artery. It joins the superficial cerebral vein at the posterior edge of the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone and typically flows into the sphenoparietal sinus, though it may also drain into the cavernous sinus. In some cases, it merges with the anterior cerebral vein to form the basal vein.
