Corpus: Costoclavicular ligament
1. Definition
The costoclavicular ligament is a flat, strong, diamond-shaped ligament located near the sternoclavicular joint.
2. Anatomy
The fibres of the ligament extend from the upper, medial part of the 1st costal cartilage, running diagonally upwards and laterally to attach to the underside of the clavicle.
Ventrally, the ligament connects with the tendon of the subclavius muscle, while dorsally, it is adjacent to the subclavian vein.
3. Function
The costoclavicular ligament secures the clavicle to the thorax, stabilising the sternoclavicular joint by resisting upward forces applied on the clavicle.
