Definition
The cartilage of the nasal septum is a disc-shaped, hyaline cartilage of the nose which, together with the bony part of the nasal septum, divides the nasal cavity vertically into 2 spaces.
Anatomy
The cartilage of the nasal septum is somewhat thinner in its centre than at the edges.
Its anterior margin is connected to the right and left nasal bones, as well as to the anterior margins of the lateral nasal cartilages. The anterior tip is in contact with the medial crura of the greater alar cartilage via connective tissue cords.
The posterior margin of the cartilage of the nasal septum is connected to the lamina perpendicularis of the ethmoid bone, the inferior margin to the vomer and the palatine process of maxilla.
The septal cartilage does not extend to the lowest point of the nasal septum. The latter is formed by the medial crura of the greater alar cartilage and the skin.
